Breaking a CNC router bit is one of the most frustrating setbacks in any cutting operation — especially when the cause isn’t immediately obvious. Whether you’re running solid carbide straight or compression bits, understanding why bits snap is the first step to preventing it. Below are the most common reasons your router bit may be breaking, and what you can do to fix it.
Incorrect Feed Rate
The most common reason a router bit breaks is an incorrect feed rate. Moving too slowly through the material causes the bit to generate excess heat, which prematurely dulls the cutting edge and can lead to melting or burning on your material’s edge — eventually causing the bit to snap. Moving too quickly creates the opposite problem: excessive pressure on the cutting tip results in a rough, jagged edge and a broken bit.

Material Movement During Cutting
Solid carbide router bits hold a sharp edge for a long time, but that hardness comes with a tradeoff — they’re brittle. Any movement in your workpiece during a cut can instantly snap a bit.
Clamps and screws may seem secure, but they don’t provide consistent pressure across the full surface of the material, leaving spots where the workpiece can flex. A vacuum table is the most reliable solution for consistent clamping pressure. If your CNC doesn’t have one, high-quality double-sided tape is a strong alternative for keeping material stationary.
Worn or Faulty Collet
A worn collet is an often-overlooked cause of router bit failure. For normal daily use, collets should be replaced every 3-6 months and cleaned with a collet brush each time you swap a bit. Over time, collets lose their grip — allowing the bit to slip mid-cut and then re-engage, shearing the bit at the shank.
The most common break point is the transition between the cutting flutes and the solid shank. However, if your bits are consistently breaking on the solid shank of the router bit, it’s a strong sign your collet needs replacing.
