HARTLAUER BITS began as WALTER HARTLAUER SIGNS from 1968-1995 in Eugene, Oregon, USA. Walter Hartlauer, a legend in the sign industry, started making fancy signs and letters with a bandsaw, chisel and putty for whoever would buy them. With his vision of using a router and a guide instead of a bandsaw to cut letters, he created a pin router and a size changer to cut out letters using routers. He sold his machinery, patterns and router bits to sign shops from state to state. Later, with the discovery of computerized routing, Walter Hartlauer Signs transitioned into Hartlauer Bits and to only selling router bits in 1996.

In 1996, Walter’s daughter, Audrey took over the company with her husband, David Freeman, an electronic tech. Audrey has continued her father’s vision to assist craftsmen and the sign industry everywhere to be successful in cutting with a router. Their son, Nic, has carried on the tradition of assisting all who need help with their routing needs.
